So good to learn more about Creeping Charlie/Ground Ivy!! I’ve been noticing this one for ages but we had never really been introduced until now! Thank you, Mary Plantwalker, my absolute favorite Substack writer!

Let’s go to that awesome camp in GA together in June 😊

Thank you, dear sister! And I'd love that!!!

I had no idea that hostas, moneyplant flowers, and pawpaw flowers were all edible. Wow! Thank you also for the information about ground ivy. I am learning more about identifying plants and your close-ups were helpful. I had only heard about its respiratory uses, so you have opened my eyes in more than one way :) It's hard to groove when you feel called to bear witness, but I'll do my best. Here's my thing to share: United Plant Savers memberships come with membership to the American Horticultural Society's reciprocal garden network, which gives you discounts to hundreds of gardens.

I hear you-hard to groove when you feel called to bear witness, but we will do our best. Thank you so much for being here, Tabatha, and also for reminding us about the UpS membership perk!!!

What a beautiful homage to ground ivy. May we all sing our own songs, for the earth and her glory. For the New Earth. Thank you Mary!

How sweet of you Mary! Thank you for mentioning the bandana! I was also so excited to learn about the Hike To Heal group--I didn't know about them. Thanks so much. How fun that they do a summer camp as well. I'm defin going to sign up for some of their hikes. Love everything about this. I also signed the petition for the forest--how upsetting to hear they want to revoke on the promise. Hopefully getting the word out will help make a difference. 💐

Thank you for signing the petition, Nina! Every voice matters! Would love, love to see you on the Hike to Heal trail! Dogwood blossom delights and the scent of lilac flowers to you~

So glad you've shared about ground ivy. I love it, it's growing in multiple places, and I discovered that in some patches the leaves taste like lamb while others have a more earthy flavor. Great pot herb too. Can't wait until it finally starts up this year.

Thank you for sharing! Do mean to you the leaves taste like lamb, or lambs quarters? I love hearing what people think plants taste like. I’ve also noticed plants can taste quite differently depending on where they are growing/who they are growing next to.

They taste like lamb up in the garden where it’s dryer, and more like mint down in under the apple trees. They’re thickest in the birch grove but I haven’t tried them there.

It fills me with joy to hear your awareness, attention and love for the small noticings of the plant world. Thank you.

Question, I added Ground Ivy to an area that I had been encouraging violets, this year, so far, violets have moved away, do you know if they aren't good bed mates? Or will they sort it out?

The violets are profuse maybe 10 feet away.

Love your great efforts!

I don’t know for certain but Ground Ivy does tend to dominate the plant scene….Then again so do violets! I really don’t know! They are growing together here, equally, but there’s more variables in each setting so hard to clearly answer. I love learning from plants in community!

This love letter was jampacked with interesting tidbits! I learned so much. I was really surprised by how many animals would not eat our cursed/beloved gilly. Where do you think the name hedge maids came from? I imagine because it grows under hedges, but why the “maids”?

Mary Morgaine Squire's avatar

Thank you, Love! Hedgemaids is a British play on the name Gill over the Ground which in this case, they say Gill is not derived from the French word gullier but from the British name Gillian. They also call it Girl over the Ground. I forgot about calling it Gilly, but do we pronounce it with a hard G or soft;-)

It is such a tricky one to find balance in the inherent conflict of communicating through tech about the holiness of the natural world while it simultaneously rips it/us apart. Thank you for the reminder that it won't always be around. Many blessings to you and I greatly appreciate you taking the time to read/comment!
